Last night Blackfilm.com attended the premiere of Fox Searchlight’s musical film Black Nativity, held at the world famous Apollo Theater in New York.
Directed by Kasi Lemmons, the cast includes Forest Whitaker, Angela Bassett, Jennifer Hudson, Jacob Latimore, Tyrese, Vondie Curtis-Hall, Mary J. Blige, Nas, Rotimi, Uzimann, Henry Hunter Hall, Alexander Blaise, Samantha Gelnaw, Kevin Cannon, J. Mallory McCree, Ebony J Lewis, Volieda Webb, Jason Samuels Smith, Chris Nuñez, and José Báez.
Also in attendance were ‘Nativity’ producers William Horberg, Trudie Styler and Celine Rattray, Fox Serachlight Senior Vice President of Production Zola Mashariki, Best Man Holiday director Malcolm D. Lee with son Langston, actor Eric West, Lynn Whitfield, actress – singer Antonique Smith, Sting, Antonia Banderas and Melanie Griffith, Tamara Tunie and Gregory Genet, ‘Little Ballers’ co-director Lisa Bonner, Sister 2 Sister Magazine publisher Jamie Foster Brown, actor Justin Davis, model Keenyah Hill, and singer Alyson Williams among others.
Following the screening, the cast and guests headed to the afterparty at Marcus Samuelson’ s Red Rooster.
In a contemporary adaptation of Langston Hughes’ celebrated play, “Black Nativity” follows Langston (Jacob Latimore), a street-wise teen from Baltimore raised by a single mother, as he journeys to New York City to spend the Christmas holiday with his estranged relatives Reverend Cornell and Aretha Cobbs (Forest Whitaker and Angela Bassett). Unwilling to live by the imposing Reverend Cobbs’ rules, a frustrated Langston is determined to return home to his mother, Naima (Jennifer Hudson). Langston embarks on a surprising and inspirational journey and along with new friends, and a little divine intervention, he discovers the true meaning of faith, healing, and family.
Black Nativity hits theater on November 27.
