On Monday The Broadway League officially announced that theatre performances in New York will remain closed through 2020 due to Covid-19. It is still unclear as to when the shows will be able to return to stage.
In their statement, The Broadway League said they will continue to work with city and state officials as well as leaders in science, technology, and medicine to develop the safest way to restart the industry for audience members and staff. Some of the items currently under review include screening and testing, cleaning and sanitizing, backstage protocols and more.
“The Broadway experience can be deeply personal but it is also, crucially, communal,” said Chairman of the Board of The Broadway League Thomas Schumacher. “The alchemy of 1000 strangers bonding into a single audience fueling each performer on stage and behind the scenes will be possible again when Broadway theatres can safely host full houses. Every single member of our community is eager to get back to work sharing stories that inspire our audience through the transformative power of a shared live experience. The safety of our cast, crew, orchestra and audience is our highest priority and we look forward to returning to our stages only when it’s safe to do so. One thing is for sure, when we return we will be stronger and more needed than ever.”
Anyone with a ticket for a performance through January 3, 2021 will receive an email from the point of purchase with information on refund and exchange options. Anyone with a ticket that has not received and email should contact the point of purchase for additional details on refund and exchange options.
At the time of the previous shut down announcement on March 21, 2020 there where 31 musicals and plays running, 8 new shows in preview and 8 preparing for a spring debut.
