
Award winning actor, director and playwright Colman Domingo (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Zola, Candyman, Euphoria) is set to star in the lead role of ‘Rustin,’ the first feature film that President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground, is producing.
Rustin tells the story of charismatic, gay, civil rights activist Bayard Rustin, who overcame an onslaught of obstacles, and altered the course of American history by organizing the 1963 March on Washington.
Also starring opposite Domingo will be Chris Rock (Fargo, Untitled David O. Russell Project, Top Five) who will play activist Roy Wilkins; Glynn Turman (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom) will play A. Philip Randolph; and Audra McDonald (Respect) will play Ella Baker.

George C. Wolfe (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom) will be directing and co-writing the feature with Dustin Lance Black. Producing will be Academy Award winner Bruce Cohen (American Beauty) and Higher Ground’s Tonia Davis. Executive producers will be Higher Ground’s Mark R. Wright, Alex G. Scott.
Higher Ground’s upcoming slate of projects in partnership with Netflix includes the feature films Exit West and Satellite, and the comedic series The G Word with Adam Conover. Higher Ground presented the hit 2021 Netflix film, Fatherhood, starring Kevin Hart, and the critically acclaimed Netflix film Worth, starring Michael Keaton, Stanley Tucci and Amy Ryan.
