Today television network, The CW, announced the first look at the Powerpuff Girls pilot. The live-action series stars Yana Perault as “Buttercup”, Dove Cameron as “Bubbles”, and Chloe Bennett as “Blossom”. The pilot also stars Donald Faison as “Professor Drake Utonium,” Nicholas Podany as “Jojo Mondel,” and Robyn Lively as “Sara Bellum.” Powerpuff Girls Yana Perrault
The show is based on the original Cartoon Network animated series and characters created by Craig McCracken. In the networks official statement, the logline for the show reads: The Powerpuff Girls used to be America’s pint-sized superheroes, now they’re disillusioned twentysomethings who resent having lost their childhood to crime fighting. Will they agree to reunite now that the world needs them more than ever?
Yana Perrault is plays the feisty Buttercup from the trio and while new to tv, is not new to acting. She starred in the Broadway musical Jagged Little Pill in 2019. Perrault is also a singer and musician who released her debut album, Headphones, Please, in 2018. Powerpuff Girls will make Perrault’s tv debut if the show makes it to series (it has yet to be greenlit).

The live action super-powered trio will stay true to original Powerpuff style, aligning each girl with their character color or pink, green, and blue. Although pictures have already been floating around of the women wearing the classic costumes viewers know from the original series, the network wants to reiterate that the costumes were from flashback scenes of their teenage years. The show actually revolves around the girls as adults.
Buttercup Utonium, known as the rebellious badass of The Powerpuff Girls in its heyday, is more sensitive than her tough exterior suggests. Buttercup has spent her adulthood trying to shed her Powerpuff Girl identity and live an anonymous life. Blossom Utonium was the spunky, conscientious, Little-Miss-Perfect child. She now holds several advanced degrees and suffers from anxiety due to her repressed kiddie-superhero trauma, but aims to become a leader again. Bubbles Utonium was known for her sweet-girl disposition that won America’s hearts as a child. She still sparkles as an adult, but her charming exterior belies an unexpected toughness and wit. She’s initially more interested in recapturing her fame than saving the world, but she just might surprise us and herself.

Heather Regnier and Diablo Cody co-wrote the series and also serve as executive producers on the project. Also executive producing are pilot director, Maggie Kiley (Dial a Prayer), Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and David Madden. Erika Kennair produces while the series is produced by Berlanti Productions and Vita Vera Films in association with Warner Bros. Television.
