Coming Soon: ‘Highland Park’ with Kimberly Elise, Naturi Naughtonby Wilson Morales
March 28, 2011
Hitting theaters in 2011 is The Bureau of Moving Pictures feature ‘Highland Park,’ whch stars Parker Posey, Danny Glover, Billy Burke, Kimberly Elise, Naturi Naughton, and Rockmond Dunbar.
The film, which also features Michelle Forbes, Bo Derek, Haaz Sleiman, Deborah Ann Woll, and John Carroll Lynch, centers on a group of high school faculty members and their desire to improve their community, which was once a desirable Detroit neighborhood whose prosperity was built on the auto industry, but which is now run-down and emptied of hope. Confronted with overwhelming problems and limited resources, their lives and priorities change when one of the teachers wins the lottery with the lucky numbers they’ve played for ten years after hearing budget cuts have eliminated all their jobs. The film looks at the different ways each character would spend the money if they had the chance. A twist of fate intervenes – a teacher uses the money to restore the local library, and in the process energizes the community.
Naughton’s character wants to be a singer and break out of her neighborhood, but she’s has a daughter who is two-years-old and trying to break out of her circumstance.
Posey will star as Shirley Paine, onetime homecoming queen and now the Mayor of Highland Park. A scheming opportunist, she is a woman drunk on power, eager to cash in on the city’s notoriety.
The Bureau’s Andrew Meieran is directing and producing the dark comedy, which he co-wrote with Christopher Keyser.
It’s about a real place in Detroit called Highland Park. The film was designed to help reopen the neighborhood’s McGregor Library, shut down in 2002 because of a lack of funds. Meieran also directed a documentary tracing Highland Park’s history and the library restoration efforts.
