Veteran actor John C. McGinley has been added to the cast of ‘I, Alex Cross,’ starring Tyler Perry.

Variety reports that McGinley is set to play Chief of Police Richard Brookwell, Cross’s boss. His character is a vigorous, ambitious man — the opposite of Cross’ gentle, empathetic approach to solving homicides.

Directed by Rob Cohen and featuring Rachel Nichols, Jean Reno, Ed Burns, Giancarlo Esposito and Matthew Fox, ‘I, Alex Cross’ is the reboot of the James Patterson novels where a younger Cross hunts down a serial rapist (played by Fox) that may have been the one who killed his pregnant wife.

McGinley spent nine seasons as Perry Cox on the sitcom series ‘Scrubs.’ His other notables roles were Bob Slydell in ‘Office Space,’ Sergeant Red O’Neill in Oliver Stone’s ‘Platoon‘ and Marv in Stone’s ‘Wall Street.’

Perry, after Idris Elba was initially approached, is taking over the role that Academy Award winner Morgan Freeman had when he starred in both Paramount films, ‘Kiss the Girls’ (1997) and ‘Along Came A Spider’ (2001).

The film is being produced by QED partners Bill Block and Paul Hanson.
