Deadline reported today that Kevin Hart and Wesley Snipes are set to play in the Netflix limited Drama series True Story. The series comes from Narcos: Mexico executive producer, Eric Newman, who will serve as writer and executive producer for the show. Producing will be Hart’s, HartBeat Productions, alongside Newman’s banner, Grand Electric. Luke Cage executive producer, Charles Murray, serves as showrunner and executive producer for the series.
In True Story Hart plays Kid, who like himself, is a Philadelphia born and bred comedian. A tour stop in Kid’s hometown soon turns into a life and death situation for the world famous comedian when the consequences of a lost evening with his wayward older brother, Carlton (Snipes), threaten to destroy everything he’s built. Watchmen director Stephen Williams will be directing the first four episodes of the series while Star Trek: Picard director, Hanelle Culpepper, directs the final four.
In the Deadline article, Hart says “I’ve never been more excited about an acting project in my career, I’ve always been a fan of Wesley Snipes and working with him is mind-blowing. Having HartBeat Productions at the helm and working alongside Eric Newman as a partner and creative arm has been unreal, nobody is ready for what this show is going to be.”
True Story will be Hart’s first dive into a dramatic series. He made his dramatic cinema debut in 2017’s The Upside, but has many blockbuster’s under his belt starring in Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Jumanji: The Next Level, and Think Like a Man. The comedian can also be seen in the upcoming films Fatherhood and The Man From Toronto.
Snipes has starred in classics like White Men Can’t Jump, Jungle Fever and the Blade franchise. He can currently be seen in Netflix’s Dolemite Is My Name and will be starring in the upcoming Coming to America 2.
