Empire power producers Lee Daniels and Brian Grazer have just landed their scripted comedy series – Ms. Pat – on BET+ with a 10 episode order. This multi-camera sit-com is based on the memoir and stand-up comedy of Patricia “Ms. Pat” Williams. As the fictionalized version of herself, “Ms. Pat” has gone from convict who earned her hustle from the streets of Atlanta to suburban mom in conservative middle America. She navigates her new terrain along with her altruistic husband (J. Bernard Calloway), her struggle of a sister (Tammi Roman), and a dissimilar set of children (Theodore Barnes, Briyana Guadalupe, Vince Swann).
In 2016, “Ms. Pat” was originally slated for FOX with a different writer, but then made its way to Hulu where the pilot was greenlighted in 2019. The project’s pilot is now penned by Patricia Williams and Jordan Cooper with Daniels, Grazer, Samie Kim Falvey (President of Imagine Television, and Anthony Hill (doubling as series showrunner) are all executive producing this project.
This is Lee Daniels first scripted series for the network, saying, “This is the type of show I wish I had growing up – raw, funny, and honest. Ms. Pat and Jordan Cooper are magic together. We are thrilled that Lee Daniels Entertainment and BET are working together for the first time. Historic!”
In her first starring role for TV, Williams is no rookie to the industry. The comedian, actress, podcaster, and author was named one of Variety’s Top Comedians to Watch in 2019. She has appeared on This is not Happening, Last Comic Standing, and Mom’s Night Out.
