Lucas Van Engen talks ‘We Own This City’

blackfilm.com correspondent Koku Tona had an opportunity to speak with actor Lucas Van Engen about his role as Leo Wise in the HBO drama ‘We Own This City’. Van Engan talked about everything Midwestern beginnings, to his career, to choosing New York over Los Angeles.

About Lucas Van Engan

Actor, director, teacher and Indiana native Lucas Van Engen is ready to light up screens across the US in HBO’s highly anticipated limited series “We Own This City,” also starring Dagmara DominczykDomenick LombardozziTreat WilliamsDony Harvey and Gabrielle Carteris, which premiered on Monday, April 25TH. Lucas stars as famed real life federal prosecutor ‘Leo Wise’ in the series.

HBO’s “We Own This City” is based on the book “We Own This City: A True Story of Crime, Cops and Corruption” by Baltimore Sun reporter Justin Fenton, this gritty drama chronicles the rise and fall of the Baltimore Police Department’s Gun Trace Task Force. It exposes the corruption and moral collapse that befalls an American city in which the policies of drug prohibition and mass arrest are championed at the expense of actual police work. Created and written by David Simon, creator of “The Wire,” and George Pelecanos, production took place in Baltimore. Helping coach and lead the next generation of stars, Lucas helped create The Brownstone Class which gives his students the unique experience of receiving invaluable information when it comes to acting. At The Brownstone Class, they approach every actor as a unique instrument with different tuning needs. Lucas works intuitively with each actor drawing from his 20 years of experience working on set and studying in New York City. The goal is that everyone that comes through his classes will eventually have to miss class because they booked paid work.
Born and raised in South Bend Indiana, Lucas’ older brother Stephen inspired him to get into acting after seeing him audition for a place. By the time Lucas was a freshman in high school, he was auditioning for school plays on the regular while also pursuing sprots and staying active as a teen. Once graduating from high school. Lucas would go on to major in engineering at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, MI where he also minored in language and music. After college, Lucas convinced himself to take a chance on acting as a professional career and moved to New York City.  Residing in New York, Lucas is best known for starring in some of televisions most popular series including Showtime’s “City on a Hill,” NBC’s “Chicago Fire,” ABC’s “Quantico,” and ABC’s “Emergence,” to name a few. When Lucas is not busy in front of or behind the camera or helping the next generation of actors through his classes, he can be found spending time with his wife in NYC. Lucas is also an avid lover of yoga, basketball, golf and running.
