Blackfilm.com has learned that singer-actress Nicki Minaj has officially joined the cast of Barbershop 3, which will be directed by Malcolm D. Lee (The Best Man, Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins, The Best Man Holiday).
She joins returning and confirmed cast members Ice Cube, Cedric the Entertainer, Sean Patrick Thomas and Eve as well as Chyna Lane and recent Oscar winner Common, who were both added recently.
Lee had posted a tweet on his account recently, stating “What up, Tweeples?! That new Barbershop movie with @icecube @CedEntertainer @TheRealEve @NICKIMINAJ? And a host of others? Y’all ain’t ready”
At this time, it’s not confirmed which cast members from the previous films will also return as deals are still being sorted out.
MGM produced the 2002 original, which cost $12 million and grossed $75 million domestic while the 2004 sequel, Barbershop 2: Back in Business, cost $30 million and grossed $65 million. Tim Story (Ride Along) directed the first film, while Kevin Sullivan helmed the second.
In both films, Cube starred as Calvin Palmer, Jr., a man who inherited a South Side Chicago barbershop from his father. He spends his normal days working in the shop, interacting with co-workers and the surrounding community.
Cube will produce Barbershop 3 with Matt Alvarez, Bob Teitel and George Tillman Jr. His next work as a producer to see release is the NWA biopic, Straight Outta Compton, which hits theaters August 14, 2015
Minaj was last seen opposite Cameron Diaz in The Other Woman, which was her first live-action film. She previously had voiced the character Steffie in Ice Age: Continental Drift.
