In a historic moment at the 97th Academy Awards, Paul Tazewell became the first Black man to win the Oscar® for Best Costume Design, honored for his exceptional work on the film adaptation of Wicked. The win not only underscores Tazewell’s exceptional talent, but also marks a significant milestone in the representation of Black artists in the film industry.

Prior to Tazewell’s achievement, Ruth E. Carter was the only Black person to have won in this category. She made history with her wins for both Black Panther in 2019 and its sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, in 2023, becoming the first African American to win and the first Black woman to win two Oscars® in any category.
