Pete Docter talks ‘Soul’ Inspiration for 3rd Oscar Win
Pete Docter and Dana Murray accepted the Best Animated Feature Film Oscar for ‘Soul’ at the 93rd Annual Academy Awards, but for Docter this wasn’t his first. He has won in this category three times, including ‘Up’ (2009) and ‘Inside Out’ (2015).
blackfilm.com correspondent Koku Tona had an opportunity to question the team about the inspiration for the award-winning film after their celebratory speech, and the pair was all smiles as Murray ribbed him for coming up with such a unique concept. Pete Docter went on to talk ‘Soul’ inspiration for 3rd Oscar win.

We previously interviewed Docter, Murray, and Kemp Powers about the then pending release of ‘Soul’, which has continued to make history ever since. ‘Soul’ is the first Pixar animation to feature an African-American protagonist, and is the only film to ever receive an Oscar for Best Animated Film without a theatrical release.
The film also won a second Oscar last night for Best Music (Original Score) awarded to the lively Jon Batiste, and musical duo Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, also known as the legendary Nine Inch Nails.

‘Soul’ was released on Christmas Day, 2020 and can be streamed on Disney+.
The star-studded cast includes:
Jamie Foxx, Tina Fey, Phylicia Rashad, Donnell Rawlings, Ahmir-Khalib Thompson, Angela Bassett, Daveed Diggs, and many more.
