Regina King, Uzo Aduba, Zendaya, And More Snag Major Wins @ the 72nd EMMY Awards

Last night, the Television Academy celebrated the 72nd Emmy Awards in a socially distanced ceremony, recognizing excellence in primetime programming and individual achievement for the 2019-2020 television season.

The 72nd Emmy Awards were broadcast live from the Staples Center in Los Angeles on ABC, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel and produced by Done+Dusted, Reginald Hudlin and KIMMELOT. The telecast featured awards in 23 Emmy categories presented by top talent from some of television’s most acclaimed programs.

Also featured, was the Governors Award, which is given to “an individual, company, organization or project for outstanding achievement in the arts and sciences or management of television which is either of a cumulative nature or so extraordinary and universal in nature as to go beyond the scope of the Emmy Awards presented in the categories and areas of the competition.”

This year’s recipient was Tyler Perry, who was the first Black person to ever individually be awarded the honor. Perry was introduced by Oprah and Chris Rock before accepting the award. In his touching acceptance speech, Perry told an anecdotal story about a quilt his grandmother gifted him when he was 19. At the time, he was “embarrassed by it” and thought it had “no value,” he said, but later learned its value. “Here I was, a person who prides myself on celebrating our heritage, our culture, and I didn’t even recognize the value in my grandmother’s quilt. I dismissed her work and her story because it didn’t look like what I thought it should. Now, whether we know it or not, we are all sewing our own quilts with our thoughts, our behaviors, our experiences and our memories.” Click here to listen to Tyler Perry’s impassioned speech!

Presenters and surprise guests included Anthony Anderson, Jennifer Aniston, Jason Bateman, Ty Burrell, LaVerne Cox, America Ferrera, Morgan Freeman, Ilana Glazer, Abbi Jacobson, Ken Jeong, Mindy Kaling, Tatiana Maslany, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Bob Newhart, D-Nice, Randall Park, Issa Rae, RuPaul, Jason Sudeikis, Gabrielle Union, Lena Waithe, J.J. Watt and Oprah Winfrey.

Singer-songwriter and GRAMMY-winning artist H.E.R. made her Emmy debut with a special “In Memoriam” performance.

Additionally, Emmys were awarded in 100 other categories at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards over four consecutive nights, Monday, Sept. 14, through Thursday, Sept. 17, with a fifth broadcast ceremony on Saturday, Sept. 19, on FXX.
