Two members of Netflix’s sketch comedy series, Astronomy Club, are developing a comedy about a Black detective agency for HBO Max. The yet to be titled project is being developed in conjunction with Cowboy Bear Ninja Productions. The show was created by the comedic duo and is based on a group of self-described sleuths who unite to create Harlem’s last all-Black detective agency after an outbreak of petty crimes goes unsolved.
Bowen revealed to Deadline back in June that the show was inspired by his eight year tenure in Harlem and his many run in with law enforcement while there. Milligan was quoted saying “We’re in a time where Black people, in particular, are getting a chance to venture out and not just do the same thing that we’ve been forced to do like playing a thug or a drug dealer so with [this show] we’ve got the opportunity to create a heightened world like Curb Your Enthusiasm or Reno 911.”
Bowen and Milligan are members of Astronomy Club, the first all-black house improv team at Upright Citizen’s Brigade in New York. The sketch comedy show of the same name premiered and aired for only one season on Netflix in 2019. The show can still be viewed on the streamer.
