Hit sports-dramedy The Game is returning to tv screens! The popular CW and BET reboot has received a ten-episode order from Paramount+ and will see the return of original cast members Wendy Raquel Robinson (The Steve Harvey Show, Insecure) and Hosea Chanchez (Black Lightening). Producing the series are CBS Studios, Akil Productions and Grammnet NH Productions. ‘The Game’ Reboot Paramount+
In the reboot, Robinson and Chanchez will reprise their roles as the hilariously beloved mother and son duo Tasha Mack and Malik Wright. Girlfriends creator, Mara Brock Akil, created The Game which originally aired on The CW for three seasons as a half-hour comedy. After the success seen from The CW, The Game was moved to BET for six additional seasons, becoming a hour-long dramedy.
The Game is moving from San Diego to Las Vegas, where we’ll see new players offer a modern-day examination of Black culture through the prism of pro football. The team will tackle racism, sexism, classism and more as they fight for fame, fortune, respect and love—all while trying to maintain their souls as they each play The Game.
The reboot was announced at Paramount+’s investor presentation – it was also announced that the show will be returning to its half-hour format. Devon Greggory (American Soul) will serve as showrunner while also executive producing alongside Brock Akil, Salim Akil and original executive producer Kelsey Grammer and Tom Russo of Grammnet NH Productions.
From a Deadline article, Mara Brock Akil commented:
“Fifteen years ago, I created The Game and am so proud of the success we had, and that I was able to create characters and stories that resonated with so many people…I couldn’t be happier about leaving my beloved characters like Tasha Mack and Malik Wright in the hands of Devon, Wendy and Hosea, who I know will build off of the rich foundation the show has.”
Mara Brock Akil is a screenwriter and producer who is responsible for the hit shows Girlfriends and its spinoff The Game. Brock Akil can also be credited for creating the Gabrielle Union led BET series Being Mary Jane and OWN’s Love Is.
