‘The Killing of Kenneth Chamberlain’: Morgan Freeman EP’d Film To Debut September 17th

It was announced today that Gravitas Ventures will release The Killing Of Kenneth Chamberlain both theatrically and on most digital VOD platforms Friday, September 17th. The film comes from executive producers Lori McCreary and Morgan Freeman of Revelations Entertainment and produced Redbird Entertainment’s and Enrico Natale and David Midell, who also directs.

The Killing Of Kenneth Chamberlain tells the true story of the events that led to the death of Kenneth Chamberlain Sr., an elderly African American veteran with bipolar disorder, who was killed during a conflict with police officers who were dispatched to his home. the film comes at an important time in the national conversation about systemic racism and is a searing example of law enforcement’s sometimes callous and cruel treatment of people of color, echoing recent high-profile incidents involving George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and countless others.

The Killing Of Kenneth Chamberlain quickly became a festival favorite after it made its world-premier at the Austin Film Festival and won the Audience Award and the Narrative Jury Award there. At the Urbanworld Film Festival it won the Jury Award for best US Narrative, and continued winning at festivals, earning a number of awards.

Midell used his experience as a former behavioral therapist, and as someone on the autism spectrum himself as inspiration for the film. He says of the project:

“Our goal all along has been to ask important questions about how our criminal justice system treats people of color, people in low-income areas, and people living with mental health challenges.”
