Released today was the trailer for Adah Obekpa’s, The American King starring rapper, actor and businessman Akon.
The film mixes the spirit of Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall, the provocative ideas of The New York Times‘ 1619 Project, with the shadow of the Trump presidency colliding and conflating to create a unique oddball experience.
In The American King, Sebastian (who may or may not actually be Akon) is an ex-con dealing with some dangerous, yet sensitive Russian gangsters whom he owes money. Suddenly, he gets an unbelievable offer to escape it all, courtesy of a mysterious High Priestess who seeks to fulfill a 400-year-old prophecy: Choose an American who will become King of an ancient African kingdom, and restore it to the global superpower it once was. And guess who that lucky American happens to be?
Upon learning of the arrival of the High Priestess and Sebastian’s ascension to the throne, the CIA and the Vice President scramble to find pertinent information about this woman of mystery, leading to the unraveling of the most guarded secret about the founding of the United States of America.
As Sebastian learns about the reality of his situation, he comes under attack from his party-minded friends, traitorous advisors, and a corrupt corporation that seeks to exploit the country’s resources. Meanwhile, back in the States, the President sees an opportunity to use the situation to become “the greatest President ever,” but only if he decides to support this upstart American King and… Make Africa Great Again.
