Tyler James Williams, who had a breakout in 2014 with a lead role in Justin Simien’s Dear White People and a recurring role on AMC’s The Walking Dead, has been tapped to co-star with Gary Sinise in CBS’ Criminal Minds spinoff series.
Written by Criminal Minds executive producer/showrunner Erica Messer, the spinoff is currently set as a pilot that will shoot in mid-February and air as a planted episode in the flagship series at a later date. Criminal Minds currently airs on Wednesday nights.
Like Criminal Minds, the spinoff focuses on a division of the FBI. It follows agents helping American citizens who find themselves in trouble abroad. Sinise plays their boss, 20-year veteran Jack Garrett.
Williams will play the sweet and incredibly smart Monty. As the team’s tech analyst, Monty stays at home while the team works abroad. His attention to detail and kind manner are invaluable as he liaises with the families of those in trouble and uses his tech savvy to help the team fill in the holes as they search for a killer far from home.
Mark Gordon, Erica Messer and Nick Pepper will serve as exec producers. Messer will also write the episode. ABC Studios will produce, in association with CBS Television Studios and The Mark Gordon Company.
Williams is best known for the title role of Chris Rock’s UPN comedy Everybody Hates Chris.
