Sony Pictures has announced that Will Smith‘s upcoming drama, Concussion, will hit theaters this year on Christmas Day.

Based on Jeanne Marie Laskas‘ 2009 GQ article “Game Brain,” writer-director Peter Landesman (“Parkland”) has Smith playing Dr. Bennet Omalu, a real-world forensic neuropathologist whose research has helped bring attention to the concussions that occurs with NFL players and the effects that it has on them after their playing days are over.

Also cast in the film are Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Omalu’s wife, Alec Baldwin, Bitsie TullochAlbert Brooks,  Luke Wilson, Arliss Howard, Paul Reiser, David Morse, and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as former NFL safety Dave Duerson, a three-time Pro Bowl pick who died in 2011 from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest.

At his request, Duerson’s brain was sent to researchers, who determined that the athlete had suffered from the debilitating symptoms of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) caused by his football injuries.

Giannina Facio, Ridley Scott and Michael Schaefer will produce for Scott Free while David Wolthoff and Larry Shuman will produce for the Shuman Company.
