Beats by Dre Releases”Hair Daze”, by Tyla Barnes

Beats by Dre has released a short film, “Hair Daze”, created by Tyla Barnes, a member of their Black Creators class. The film was released on Beats by Dre’s YouTube channel November 23, 2022. The film follows a young girl, Maya, through her journey with her natural hair.

The movie touches on many experiences that Black girls face growing up regarding their natural hair. Barnes incorporates several classic settings from Black life and Black cinema into the film, including a Black beauty salon and a mother sitting down to style her daughter’s hair. The film also touches on the social politics surrounding Black women’s hair. For instance, as a child, Maya’s mother tells expresses that certain people will sometimes categorize her hair as unprofessional. As an adult, Maya is looking to get her hair done for a job interview and this same topic of hair politics returns.

This film gives an insight into the lives of many young Black girls’ and their relationships with their hair. Barnes illustrates the joys and complexities that come with learning to love the hair that you have.
