The Directors Guild of America has released the list of nominees for its 73rd annual DGA Awards. Every year the Guild awards outstanding directors across 12 genres for their work across TV, film, commercials and more. Amongst the 55 nominees are five Black directors for their work in TV, film and commercial with two Black nominees receiving special honors in the Lifetime Achievement and Service Award category. First time nominees, Regina King and Radha Blank, are nominated for Outstanding Directorial Achievement of a First-Time Feature Film. King is nominated for her work on One Night In Miami, while Blank’s comedy – 40 Year Old Version – garnered her a nod. Spike Lee received his second DGA nomination for his work on HBO’s David Byrne’s American Utopia for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Variety/Talk/News/Sport. Lee was first nominated in 2018 for his film BlakkKlansman. Joseph Guidry’s direction on HBO’s florist competition show Full Bloom won him a nomination in the Reality category. Insecure and Queen & Slim director, Melina Matsoukas, has received a DGA nomination for the Beats commercial You Love Me, Beats by Dre. The commercial is Matsoukas’ third DGA nomination, with the director first being nominated in 2017 for her Master of None episode, “Thanksgiving” in the Comedy category; and in 2019 for Queen & Slim in the Outstanding Directorial Achievement in First-Time Feature Film category.
In the Lifetime Achievement & Service Award category, famed TV director and two time DGA president, Paris Barclay, is receiving the Life Membership award. Associate director/technical manager at CBS, Joyce Thomas, will be receiving the Franklin J. Schaffner Achievement Award.
For the first time, the Guild will be hosting the ceremony for its over 18,000 members virtually via a webcast accessible on the associations website.
