Uppercut (2025) | Official Trailer

SYNOPSIS: Golden Globe® winner Ving Rhames and Luise Grossmann star in an electrifying film about Toni (Grossmann), a determined female boxer trying to break down barriers as she redefines what it means to be a woman in today’s world. When Elliott (Rhames), a tough ex-boxing champion, accepts the challenge to train Toni , the two mismatched characters form an unlikely alliance. Their sparring and Elliott’s keen insights show the resilient young fighter that real strength comes from the challenges you overcome when life throws its biggest punches your way.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT Adapting Leberhaken for the American market was an incredibly rewarding creative challenge. The original film had a certain intimacy and rawness that I was determined to preserve, but I also saw an opportunity to deepen the narrative by introducing new layers that reflect the complexities of a modern woman’s journey. Uppercut allowed me to explore not only the fierce world of championship boxing but also the intricate dynamics of life and legacy, as well as the personal battles that shape who we are.

In this film, Toni’s story is at the heart of everything. It’s about more than just boxing — it’s about confronting the obstacles that life throws at us, and in Toni’s case, doing so in a male-dominated environment where she constantly must prove herself. The chemistry between Ving Rhames and Luiii was something truly special. From the moment they stepped into their roles, it was clear that there was a unique and powerful connection between them. Their performances bring out the very essence of what Uppercut is about: the push and pull of mentorship, the struggle for respect, and the unexpected ways in which people can change each other’s lives. What excites me most about this adaptation is how it merges the raw emotion of the original with a broader, more complex exploration of identity and power.

Every shot, every scene was crafted with the intention of highlighting the personal stories within the larger narrative. My goal was to ensure that the audience feels every punch, every moment of doubt, and every triumph alongside these characters. It’s a story that I believe will resonate deeply, not just with fans of the sport, but with anyone who understands the fight for self-definition and respect.
