Documentary ‘UNAPOLOGETIC’ Screens Today

A virtual screening event in partnership with the Film Festival Alliance for FilmEx 2021 will be held on Saturday, January 16th for UNAPOLOGETIC, a powerful documentary about the Movement for Black Lives in Chicago. Documentary ‘UNAPOLOGETIC’ screens today and can be watched @ https://theatricalathome.com/products/unapologetic.

Following the screening will be an engaging Q&A panel including filmmaker Ashley O’Shay as well as subjects Janaé Bonsu and Bella BAHHS, moderated by cultural movement journalist and abolitionist organizer Clarissa Brooks. 

Unapologetic is a Festival Day Selection, and first time feature film effort for director Ashley O’Shay, a young black female filmmaker whose career has focused on elevating marginalized voices. The Kartemquin Films feature captures a tense and polarizing moment in Chicago’s fight against racial injustice after the slaying by police of two you black Chicagoans  – Rekia Boyd and Laquan McDonald. The film is told through the eyes of two fierce millennial activists, Janaé Bonsu and Bella BAHHS, as they work to take back their community in the face of a complicit city administration. SYNOPSIS: After two Black Chicagoans are killed, millennial organizers challenge an administration complicit in state violence against its residents. Told through the lens of Janaé and Bella, two fierce abolitionist leaders, Unapologetic is a deep look into the Movement for Black Lives, from the police murder of Rekia Boyd to the election of Mayor Lori Lightfoot. Director Ashley O’Shay is a Chicago-based documentarian, director, cinematographer and DP who has also produced projects for national brands like, Ford, Boost Mobile and Dr. Martens. Her work can also be seen in the KQED docu-series “If Cities Could Dance” as well as in the Lifetime TV award-winning series “Surviving R. Kelly.”
