Exclusive: Natalia Reyes Talks ‘Terminator: Dark Fate’

Coming out this week from Paramount Pictures is Terminator: Dark Fate, directed by Tim Miller (Deadpool).

A sequel to The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgement Day, the new film will ignore all the other movies in the franchise and picks up decades later as a new type of Terminator is sent back to terminate a new target. This new group of heroes will cross paths with Sarah Connor and even a Terminator who will team up with them to make their own fate.

Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger return in their iconic roles as Sarah Connor and T-800 in Dark Fate with James Cameron, also returning as a producer and co-writer. They’re joined by Mackenzie Davis (Blade Runner 2049), Natalia Reyes (Birds of Passage), Gabriel Luna (Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) and Diego Boneta in the film with Tim Miller (Deadpool) behind the camera.

More than two decades have passed since Sarah Connor prevented Judgment Day, changed the future, and re-wrote the fate of the human race. Dani Ramos (Natalia Reyes) is living a simple life in Mexico City with her brother (Diego Boneta) and father when a highly advanced and deadly new Terminator – a Rev-9 (Gabriel Luna) – travels back through time to hunt and kill her. Dani’s survival depends on her joining forces with two warriors: Grace (Mackenzie Davis), an enhanced super-soldier from the future, and a battle-hardened Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton). As the Rev-9 ruthlessly destroys everything and everyone in its path on the hunt for Dani, the three are led to a T-800 (Arnold Schwarzenegger) from Sarah’s past that may be their last best hope.

For Colombian actress Natalia Reyes, who is best known internationally for her Spanish-speaking series, Cumbia Ninja and Lady, the Seller of Roses (Lady, La Vendedora de Rosas),this is her big Hollywood breakout role.

Blackfilm.com spoke with Reyes about being in this franchise with the original stars.

How much did you challenge yourself not to get intimidated that you were in this big big franchise film?

Natalia Reyes: It was a lot of pressure. I’ve been acting for a while, but this is my first American movie but also a Hollywood movie, but also the Terminator movie. It’s been wonderful. It’s been a great experience with tons of learning. Every day, I’m learning and being amazed by the scale of it, but really, really excited. It’s been a year now of work. I think finally people will watch the movie and that’s exciting.

Natalia Reyes stars in “TERMINATOR: DARK FATE.”

Did you watch the films growing up?

Natalia Reyes: I wasn’t even born when the first one came out. Then I saw them at home on TV. tv. Those were the movies shown in Columbia. I remember I was really young and I saw Terminator: Judgement Day first. I remember Linda Hamilton doing pull-ups and I just loved it. I remember being so blown away by this universe James Cameron created back then. He’s a visionary and he always changes the rules. That was really different to what we were used to seeing back then. It was just amazing and it’s crazy that I’m now part of the franchise. It’s a true honor.

How long did it take you to get in shape physically for the role?

Natalia Reyes, right, and Mackenzie Davis star in “TERMINATOR: DARK FATE.”

Natalia Reyes: I was lucky because they were looking to cast my character for a long time. They were looking here in the states and then they just opened the audition to Spain and Latin America, Mexico and South America and so I got on the project later. Mackenzie Davis and Gabriel Luna were working out and training and I came onboard two months before we started shooting. So we started training, weapons training and underwater training and you needed to be physically in shape because we spent six months shooting everyday. Since the film has a lot of action, we were always preparing ourselves and working with the stunts. We had a greats stunts team working with us.

What was the feeling like when you first met Linda and Arnold?

Natalia Reyes: I first met Linda when I was still auditioning. It was here in LA. I came for a callback and of course, I never expected to meet Linda in an audition. She was there and I was shocked when I realized it was Linda Hamilton that was doing the audition with me and she was so loving. She’s so generous and loving. She was hugging me. She was so supportive that I think I say she’s part of the reason that I’m here.

This is the first film with Latinos front and center of the story. How was working with Diego and Gabriel?

Natalia Reyes: It was great. It was my first time working with them but we have so many friends in common and I have many friends in Mexico and he’s worked in Colombia. We have like this big connection even though we hadn’t met before so it was just great to share with someone that speaks your same language and knows about your things. We’re really proud of this movie. Also because of that, because its diversity here because we have these Latino characters that are not small roles or they’re not like cliches or stereotypes about what a Latino should do. We’re not dealing drugs or prostitution. We’re used to these roles for Latino or being just like really small roles and, and these are like really strong characters, and I’m really proud of it. It’s just how Hollywood is changing and this is how the world is now. We want to feel represented.

It’s been over 30 years and it’s still going. Why do you think the franchise never dies?

Natalia Reyes: It such an iconic movie. The story is great. James Cameron is a visionary and he knew when it was going to happen. I think it used to be a science fiction movie but it’s not science fiction anymore. It’s pretty real and relevant. It’s a great story and this one is really special. That’s why he decided to do it because today is even more relevant than 35 years ago. This relationship that we have with technology and facial recognition and our cell phones been
