Independent Filmmaker Spotlight: Rashad Frett, Writer & Director, K.I.N.G.

The short film K.I.N.G. was directed and written by a first-time filmmaker and first-generation American from a Caribbean background, Rashad Frett. Rashad was a service member in the U.S. Army and is a graduate of N.Y.U. Tisch Graduate Film program.

Frett’s film K.I.N.G., is actually an acronym meaning Kid In Need of Guidance. This film takes the meaning of KING to the next level by providing the audience with a raw experience that is relatable in most African American communities. K.I.N.G. focuses on the authenticity of a young black male’s perspective of not having a father in his households and depending on other female family members to nurture him. This film is a reality to what a lot of young men go through growing up in one guardian household. The main character, King, goes searching for what he believes to be a parent figure to find out he had what he was looking for all along. Watching this film will also help the audience understand that everyone has a story. K.I.N.G. will have you inspired to help all KINGS and understand the pain of an innocent kid in a mess-up world.

K.I.N.G. has won awards from the D.G.A. Student Film Awards, N.Y.U. First Run Film Festival, Bronzelens Film Festival, and Gentleman Jack’s Real to Reel short film competition. He has also received awards from the 2018 BAFTA-HBO scholarship, the Martin Scorsese Young Filmmaker scholarship, a 2019 B.E.T. Blackhouse Foundation Fellowship at Sundance, recipient of the 2020 Spike Lee Production Fund, and so much more. For more on K.I.N.G. and Rashad Frett, email Rdf298@nyu.edu.
