‘Insecure’ No More: Issa Rae’s HBO Show Ends with Season 5

No more mirror raps, best friend drama, or awkward hookups because Insecure is coming to an end after five seasons. The critically acclaimed award winning HBO comedy-drama has given black women (and men) what they’ve been yearning for in a 30 minute scripted series. Women who weren’t usually given leading roles were able to see themselves in Issa’s awkwardly hilarious demeanor or Molly’s arguably necessary aggressive approach to life, love and everything else. Insecure was created Issa Rae and Larry Wilmore, the Emmy nominated show was based off Rae’s popular web series The Misadventures of an Awkward Black Girl. Rae also executive produced the series along with Prentice Penny, Melina Matsoukas, Michael Rotenberg, Dave Becky, Jonathan Berry, Amy Aniobi and Jim Kleverweis.

Insecure fans were met with a tweet on Tuesday from Issa Rae announcing the show would be coming to a close by saying, “Very excited to film our fifth and final season! We couldn’t have told a complete story without the tremendous support of our audience and the faith of @HBO. See y’all soon!”. Led by Issa Rae, Yvonne Orji, Jay Ellis, Natasha Rothwell, and Amanda Seales, the show is set to begin production on its final season later this month and hit screens in late 2021.

Fans of the show are hilariously disappointed to see the show go as can be seen on social media, however, this is not the last time we will see content from Rae. The actress/writer/producer is producing HBO’s upcoming Seen & Heard, a two-part documentary that will explore black television as seen through the eyes of trailblazers who wrote, produced, created, and starred in groundbreaking series of the past and present. Rae is also co-producing the film Sinkhole with Jordan Peele, a genre piece that engages on the question of female perfection and identity. Rae can currently be seen in HBO’s quarantine comedy Coastal Elites and Netflix’s 2020 comedy The Lovebirds.
