After months of rumors, Marvel has finally made the announcement that Chadwick Boseman will become Black Panther.
He will be the first solo lead of color, with the news that he will take the title role in the newly-announced Black Panther movie, one of three new series revealed at this morning’s Marvel Studios event at the El Capitan Theater in Los Angeles.
Boseman will play T’Challa, the head of the fictional African nation of Wakanda, in the movie, which is scheduled to be released Nov. 3 2017. In Marvel’s comic book continuity, the Black Panther — created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby was a long-serving member of the Avengers, who also enjoyed multiple critically-acclaimed solo runs throughout his 48-year history.
According to Deadline, Boseman has inked a “lucrative five-film deal” with Disney/Marvel that will see him appear in multiple Marvel universe movie adaptations, starting in 2016, with “Captain America: Civil War.”
Boseman is best known for his roles in 42 and Get On Up, playing Jackie Robinson and James Brown, respectively. While no other information about the project was released at the event, the studio did show concept art for the character, shared online via Twitter by Marvel’s Ryan Penagos.
While promoting Draft Day earlier this year, Boseman spoke to Blackfilm.com about the possibility of playing Black Panther.
Could you see yourself playing Black Panther?
Chadwick Boseman: I could see myself doing anything in terms of comic book, action, or anything like that. Black Panther, in particular, I’m not going to answer that.
If not, then which character?
CB: Let me put to you this way. If it’s character driven, I’ll do it. As long as it’s character driven, I would love to do it. If it’s just you in a suit and you with powers, then it doesn’t interest me, no matter how big it is. As long as it’s character driven, I’m totally into it. If they could figure out how to do Black Panther and make it fit the original or adapt to the times we’re in now and be new and innovative and be character driven and has the sense of what the comic book is supposed to be, but not bound by it, then yes, of course, I would want to do it.
The character will debut in 2016’s third Captain America movie, according to Feige, which has been given the new title Captain America: Civil War.
