blackfilm.com spoke to African American Film Critics Association (AAFCA) President and Co-Founder Gil Robertson IV on what the audiences can expect from this years AAFCA Awards ceremony. Celebrating 18 years as an organization and 12 years as a most relevant awards show, the AAFCA Awards is and remains the “equivalent to the Black Golden Globes.”
Year after year, the very best in Black Hollywood decked in their finest attire with their entourage in tact gather together in the most swanky location to pay tribute to each other’s work in cinema and television from the past year. While this year is a virtual experience, the pop and circumstance remains the same.
“Serving alongside an all-Black producing team, “Judas and the Black Messiah” director Shaka King created a project that permanently enshrines pivotal Black Panther leader Fred Hampton as an American hero. Released against the backdrop of the present-day Black Lives Matter movement, the film’s message of commitment and sacrifice to social justice is empowering,” says AAFCA President/Co-Founder Gil Robertson. “Daniel Kaluuya as Hampton is literally on fire…”
The 12th Annual AAFCA Awards are hosted by Tichina Arnold, J.B. Smoove, and Tone Bell. And as with any awards show, the stars will be in the house, their own house but in the house.
The audience of specially invited guests and media can expect appearances and acceptance speeches from the likes of Andra Day who blew us away with her performance of Lady Day in “The United States vs. Billie Holiday,” Daniel Kaluuya, after capturing the essence of Fred Hampton in “Judas and the Black Messiah” and Regina King after making her directorial debut with ‘One Night in Miami.”
Powerhouses in cinema who have supported AAFCA for the past decade including Debra Martin Chase who is enjoying her recent success with The Equalizer, George C. Wolfe who, by all accounts should come away with an Oscar for his direction in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”, and Kemp Powers, writer for “One Night in Miami”.
“Our Best Actress winner Andra Day was phenomenal as Billie Holiday,” continues Robertson. “Director Lee Daniels has a terrific knack for bringing out the very best from his actors and Day is no exception as she delivered a performance that serves as an impressive launch to an acting career we feel has great promise. The members of AAFCA are excited to see even more of her range in the future.”
Other creators expected to attend include: Lee Daniels, Lisa Cortes, Liz Garbus, Mariah Carey, Matthew Cherry, Michael B. Jordan, Michaela Angela Davis, Philippe Lacôte, Regina King, Shaka King, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Stacey Abrams, Trevor Noah, and the glorious Viola Davis.
