Jonathan Majors has officially signed on to headline True Threat, an explosive new action feature from filmmaker Gerard McMurray, Deadline reports exclusively.
The film follows Majors as Vernon Threat, a highly trained Special Forces operative whose life is upended after his teenage son is killed by a violent Harlem gang known as The Apollo Kids. Consumed by grief and rage, Threat sets out on a mission for vengeance, infiltrating a towering 20-story housing project known as The Carter—home base of the gang and their elusive leader, Shallow, who also happens to be Vernon’s former mentor.

Blending high-octane action with themes of fatherhood, community, and justice, True Threat promises a powerful and resonant cinematic experience. The film is being directed by McMurray, who also co-wrote the script with Hodge K. Johnson. Larnell Stovall, known for his action design on major studio projects, is on board to choreograph the film’s fight sequences.
True Threat will spotlight 52 Blocks, a Black American martial arts style born from New York’s prison system. The film is set to become the first major studio project to showcase the discipline, adding authenticity and cultural depth to its gritty, urban setting.
True Threat marks the latest production from CAT5, the action label launched by Alexis Garcia with support from Fifth Season. CAT5’s debut feature, A Working Man—directed by David Ayer and starring Jason Statham.
This news follows Majors’ casting in Martin Villeneuve’s revenge thriller Merciless. Known for critically acclaimed roles in The Last Black Man in San Francisco, HBO’s Lovecraft Country, Creed III, and Devotion, Majors continues to build a resume stacked with powerful, layered performances that without a doubt have him on a trajectory of iconic standing in Hollywood.
