The recent passing of the esteemed artist shocked the world as he kept his cancer diagnosis private for his entire battle. Portrait of an Artist is a documentary style film that takes an intimate look at the Oscar-nominated actor’s incomparable artistry, and the acting process which informed his transformative performances.
Viola Davis, Denzel Washington, Spike Lee, George C. Wolfe, Branford Marsalis, Phylicia Rashad and more take us behind the scenes to explore Boseman’s extraordinary commitment to his craft.
Boseman’s career may have been cut short by his untimely death, however the impact he has made through his artistry is felt all around the world. He has impressed audiences time and time again through his transformative performances as Jackie Robinson in 42, James Brown in Get on Up, Thurgood Marshall in Marshall and the culture changing T’Challa in Marvel’s Black Panther. Posthumously, fans were able to enjoy the artist once more as Levee Green in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom – a performance which has earned him a Golden Globe, AACTA, Critic’s Choice, SAG, and NAACP Image award. Not to mention, his role as Norman Earl “Stormin’ Norm” Holloway in Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods, which was released right before his passing, also earning him several award nominations.
