The Netflix trailer for ‘Malcolm & Marie’ dropped recently and fans (me included) have been chomping at the bit for the chance to watch Zendaya and John David Washington on screen together, in black-and-white. “This is not a love story,” the trailer advertises. “This is the story of love.” If this sneak peak is any indication of how intense and introspective the upcoming film will be, then we are in for a memorable cinematic experience. The film is scheduled for release on February 5th on Netflix.
Written and directed by Sam Levinson, the film’s trailer features Washington as Malcolm, a filmmaker, and Zendaya as his girlfriend, Marie. Taking place over the course of one evening, the couple return home after Malcolm’s film premiere as they anxiously await his film’s critical response. The evening takes a turn as revelations about their relationship surface, testing the couple’s love.
Malcolm & Marie was executive produced by Will Greenfield, Aaron L. Gilbert, Yariv Milchan, Michael Schaefer, and Scott Mescudi.
The film was shot during the COVID-19 pandemic, from June 17 to July 2. At the time, Levinson and Zendaya were both involved in the HBO show Euphoria, which had stopped production due to the pandemic. Shooting took place entirely at the Caterpillar House, a private home in Carmel, California. The film followed local COVID-19 safety protocols, including the entire cast and crew being quarantined during shooting, as well as two weeks before and after shooting, daily temperature checks, and increased sanitation measures.
Zendaya explained to the podcast OTHERtone why she filmed the secret movie, saying: “It’s basically kind of birthed within quarantine conversations Sam [Levinson] and I had in wanting to create something safely…I really wanted to be creative and I hadn’t worked in a long time, through that year anyway.
