If Beale Street Could Talk’s actor Stephan James has been selected as part of the star studded cast for Vietnam War movie The Things They Carried. The movie has created quite a buzz even before it’s gone to production due to the amount of young talent tapped to be in the film. James will star alongside It Chapter One & Two’s Bill Skarsgard, Moonlight’s Ashton Sanders, Mud’s Tye Sheridan, Oscar-nominee and Mad Max: Fury Road star Tom Hardy, SNL’s Pete Davidson, The Magnificent Seven’s Martin Sensmeier, Monos‘ Moises Arias, and Euphoria’s Angus Cloud. Rupert Sanders (Snow White And The Huntsman) will direct.
The Things They Carried is being adapted from Tim O’Brien’s popular 1990 novel of the same name. The book weaves together stories about a platoon of American soldiers on the ground in the Vietnam War as they fight for their country and sanity. Being a Vietnam vet himself, O’Brian also recounts his experiences as a soldier in the 23rd Infantry Division. Scott B. Smith (A Simple Plan) will be adapting the story for the screen. Producing the film will be David Zander of MJZ along with Dean Baker of Hardy Son & Baker. MJZ’s Amy T. Hu is executive producing. Production for the film is set for 2021 in Thailand.
James is among the young and in-demand talent in Hollywood. He gained recognition with his Canadian Screen Award win for Best Actor for his depiction of Track and Field sprinter Jessie Owens in the 2016 film Race. To add to this, James starred in Berry Jenkins’ 2018 James Baldwin adaptation, If Beale Street Could Talk. The actor can be currently seen as Walter Cruz in Prime’s Homecoming for which he received a Golden Globe nomination.
