The 90’s cult classic Candyman was rebooted and set for a highly anticipated release in 2020. However, after multiple date changes due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the movie’s new release date is now August 27, 2020 via Universal and MGM.
The supernatural horror film, originally released in 1992, was based off of the short story The Forbidden by Clive Barker and directed by Bernard Rose. In this new installment, horror movie savant Jordan Peele has remastered the classic into a tale that focuses on a real life horror story – gentrification. Yaya Abdul-Mateen II (Watchmen, The Chicago Seven) is playing a struggling artist who starts to lose his grip on reality once he uncovers the story of Candyman. Alongside Abdul-Mateen II, plays Teyonah Parris, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, Colman Domingo, Tony Todd and Vanessa Estelle Williams to round out the cast.
Candyman director, Nia DaCosta, can be credited for campaigning for the film to hit theaters before any alternative releases. She was noted saying via her Twitter account, “We made Candyman to be seen in theaters…Not just for the spectacle but because the film is about community and stories — how they shape each other, how they shape us. It’s about the collective experience of trauma and joy, suffering and triumph, and the stories we tell around it.”
If you can’t wait for your dose of Candyman, the original along with its two sequels – Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh and Candyman: Day of the Dead – can be streamed now on Prime Video. Tony Todd, who plays the original Candyman, can be seen in all three movies.
