John David Washington Thriller ‘Born to Be Murdered’ Acquired by Netflix

John David Washington is rolling out films at a rapid pace despite the pandemic. Fresh off the hype of his Christopher Nolan drama – Tenet – his latest project Born to Be Murdered has just been purchased by streaming giant Netflix for release in 2021. Washington will be playing alongside Oscar winner Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl). Ferdinando Cito Filomarino is directing the film, making this his English-language directorial debut. Before this, he served as second unit director for the international hits Call Me By Your Name and Suspiria. Filomarino also co-wrote the script with Kevin Rice. Executive producing the film is Rodrigo Teixeira from RT Features. Producing together are MeMo’s Francesco Melzi d’Eril and Gabriele Moratt alongside Luca Guadagnino and Marco Morabito under their company Frenesy Films.

Set in Athens, Greece, Born to Be Murdered follows a vacationing couple (Washington and Vikander) who fall victim to a violent conspiracy with tragic consequences. Co-starring in the film are Vicky Krieps (Phantom Thread) and Boyd Holbrook (Logan). The film was acquired by Netflix just six weeks after the streamer purchased Washington’s romantic drama Malcolm & Marie with Zendaya, for $30 million.

John David Washington rose to fame in HBO’s sports-drama Ballers opposite of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. He was the star of Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman, for which he received a Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild nod. Washington has also just been signed onto a new movie with Christian Bale and Margot Robbie in David O. Russell’s upcoming project.
