Spike Lee To Direct Colin Kaepernick Doc For ESPN

Today, ESPN Films announced that production has started on the previously announced multi-part documentary on Colin Kaepernick, with Spike Lee on board to direct. The project was announced last year as part of The Walt Disney Company’s overall first-look deal with Colin Kaepernick’s production arm Ra Vision Media.

Kaepernick, who has never given a full, first-person account of his journey, is collaborating closely with Lee who plans to use extensive new interviews and a vast never-before-seen archive to help Kaepernick tell his story from his perspective.

ESPN Films will executive produce the documentary while the production company from Spike Lee – 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks – will produce. Kaepernick is partnering with former ESPN television personality Jemele Hill, who is also a producer on the project.

More news on the project will be announced at a later date.

The overall first-look deal signed last year between Colin Kaepernick’s banner, Ra Vision Media, and Walt Disney will focus on telling scripted and unscripted stories that explore race, social injustice and the quest for equity, and will provide a new platform to showcase the work of Black and Brown directors and producers. The deal will extend across all Walt Disney Platforms including Walt Disney Television, ESPN, Hulu, Pixar, and The Undefeated. Kaepernick will work closely with The Undefeated, which is expanding its portfolio across Disney, to develop stories from the perspective of Black and Brown communities.
