Now that the Academy Awards are over, it’s time to look at the 2013 season, and The Weinstein Co. are wasting no time setting up their films that will hopefully in contention for 2014 awards. In 2012, they had a slew of films that received accolades and Oscar nominations, including The Master, Silver Linings Playbook, and Django Unchained.
For 2013, things kick off on October 18 with Ryan Coogler’s Fruitvale, a movie that The Weinstein Company picked up in a fierce auction at the Sundance Film Festival before it won two of the festival’s top prizes, the grand jury prize and the audience award for dramatic feature. The film stars Michael B. Jordan and Octavia Spencer.
Next, on November 8, they’re releasing John Wells’ adaptation of the award-winning Tracy Letts play August: Osage County, starring Oscar winners Julia Roberts, Meryl Streep and Chris Cooper.
The Weinstein Company’s most recent pick-up, the biopic Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom starring Idris Elba and Naomie Harris will be released on November 29.
Finally, they’re going to try to get Oscar winner Nicole Kidman back into the Oscar race with her portrayal of Grace of Monaco, which will be released over Christmas weekend on December 27.
No date has been set for Lee Daniels’ The Butler, which stars Forest Whitaker as an African-American man who served as a butler to eight Presidents in the White House for over thirty years. The film is loaded with bevy of talent (Oprah Winfrey, Jane Fonda, Mariah Carey, John Cusack, Cuba Gooding, Jr., Terrence Howard, Minka Kelly, Lenny Kravitz, Melissa Leo, James Marsden, David Oyelowo, Alex Pettyfer, Vanessa Redgrave, Alan Rickman , Liev Schreiber, and Robin Williams.
